A New Year and A New Mystery

A New Year and A New Mystery
Charlotte Hawkes Jan 10, 2024

Here we are! We made it through! Another year and more scraps!!!! At least that’s what it is at my house. But things aren’t the same old same old here.  I’m half way between “good dog!!” and “What Was I Thinking!!!!”. Since my house was getting back to the new normal after my husband’s passing……and I really was enjoying the time and quiet……I started looking at puppies on Facebook.  Not a good thing to do!!!  I saw some cuties at a local pet shop and I thought well I’ll just go stop by and see them.  Wrong! You can just look at puppies and not bring one home! So now Sophie and I are getting to know each other.  But I guess I forgot how needy they are and how much time they take up.  Almost as much as having kids or grandkids around all the time! But we’ll get through the potty training, etc. Soon I HOPE!!!

Enough of puppy news. First, I want to welcome the new people who have found me.  I don’t know where you came from but I’m glad you are here!  LOL! Every day this past month there have been new additions of scrap lovers who have wanted to join in the fun.  You are in the right place if you like scraps with attitude!  Hopefully you won’t be disappointed. Just remember I do this for the fun of it. I don’t get paid unless you happen to buy my patterns on Etsy. I design each pattern myself and make it before I present it to you. I try very hard to be accurate but I do make mistakes occasionally. So cut accurately and adjust your sewing to get the desired size. Don’t stretch those bias edges and ask questions if you need to. I check Facebook several times a day and that’s the best place to find me if you need help.

TIP: If you have odds and ends of different colored thread, this is a great place to use them. I wind all my extra bobbins with half empty spools of thread. When you are piecing scraps feel free to use one color thread on top and a different color on the bottom.  There is such diversity in scraps that the color differences will not be noticed and no reason to not use up good thread just because it doesn’t match. So sew those scraps with scrappy thread!

One other note – actually two: The original recipe for this quilt stated that you needed 18 Colored 5″ or 7″ squares.  You will only need 10.

The 4 squares cut from the border fabric should be 2 1/2″ and 3 1/2″.

I updated the recipe so that it has the corrected numbers. I’m sorry if you have already cut them but I guess you can put them aside for another project. I am repeating the recipe this month for all the new people to get up to speed and on board with Scraps Galore.

Scraps Galore – 2024 Mystery – Clue #1

  1. Cut a variety of 5 1/4″ (7 1/4″) assorted colored squares on both diagonals. Sew two different quarter squares sections together. Mix up the combinations. Try to have none the same. Press to one side. Make 20 units.
  2. Cut 10 – 5″ (7″) assorted colored squares on one diagonal to make 16 HST (half square triangles). Sew one contrasting HST to one section from above. Press and trim to 4 1/2″ (6 1/2″).
  3. Cut the  12  – 5″ (7″) squares from both Borders #1 and #2 on one diagonal making 24 HST of each. Sew one HST from border #1 to one HST from border #2 as shown. Press and trim to 4 1/2″ (6 1/2″).
  4. Using the border squares and those from the previous unit, sew together as shown below to make 8 1/2″ (12 1/2″) blocks. Make 8. Set aside the remaining sections.

There you have it! Happy sewing! The next clue will be with given with love on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14th.
