A Valentine Clue for YOU!

A Valentine Clue for YOU!
Charlotte Hawkes Feb 14, 2024

You made it to clue #2 and in my mind, here comes the fun part.  For those of you who like to match, this mystery will give you ample opportunity. For those of you who randomly pick your pieces, you can have fun with that too.  Myself, even though I’m not a matchy kind of scrappy person, I like to “audition” who lives next to each other.  Hopefully, you have a multitude of different scrap fabrics to chose from. For this quilt the more the better!! For the most part, many of the recipe squares will be cut on both diagonals so that already gives you four sections that are the same. The best scenario is to have each recipe square a charm square. Meaning no two the same. I also know that many of you may not have that much diversity in your scrap stash but do the best you can to mix it up randomly so there is no discernable pattern meaning no two blocks come out the same. And if you have a lifetime collection of scrappy pieces to chose from…Yayee!

I made the small size quilt first and I had most of the assorted squares already cut and waiting my shoeboxes. I only had to go through and pick out which ones I wanted to use. I love doing that! I find all kinds of fabrics from old projects and it’s kind of fun to reminisce. Now, I’m building the large size with you. The largest size squares that I save are 6″ so I have had the fun of raiding my stash to find larger pieces to cut those bigger squares. And of course that leads to smaller pieces which I then cut up to live in the shoeboxes on my wall. Did you do that? Or did you put them in a pile to deal with later? Cudos to those of you who cut them up!!!!! Ready for use the next time! And minus one mess!!!

Last month some of you made 10 blocks before I corrected the instructions to only needing 8. This month you have the options to use the extra 2 blocks using minor surgery to replace one section instead of making a whole new block. I will give you a heads up when we get there.

Ok! Lets go!

Scraps Galore – 2024 Mystery – Clue #2

  • Making the next 4 blocks: Last month you cut a variety of 5 1/4″ (7 1/4″) assorted colored squares on both diagonals and sewed two different quarter squares sections together. Mixing up the combinations. Trying to have none the same. If you have some leftover you may use them or else make some more.
  • Last month you cut 10 – 5″ (7″) assorted colored squares on one diagonal to make 16 HST (half square triangles). Sewed one contrasting HST to one section from above. If you have leftovers you will need 4. If you made 10 blocks instead of 8 and you want to reuse the 2 extra, you will only need 2.
  • Last month you cut the  12  – 5″ (7″) squares from both Borders #1 and #2 on one diagonal making 24 HST of each. You sewed one HST from border #1 to one HST from border #2 as shown. If you have leftovers you will need 4. If you made 10 blocks instead of 8 and are reusing the extra, you will only need 2.
  • Cut 12 – 3 1/4″ (4 1/4″) background squares on both diagonals. Using the 12 assorted colored 2 1/2″ (3 1/2″) squares, sew one background section to each side as shown below. Press and trim to 3 1/2″ (4 3/4″). Chose 4 and put the 8 aside.
  • Cut 3″ (4″) assorted colored squares on one diagonal. Sew one section to each side of the 4 units of above. Mix up the sections and make each one different. Press and trim to 4 1/2″ (6 1/2″).
  • Sew the 4 previous units in the correct positions as the block below making sure that the new unit is bordered on both sides by border fabric #1 as shown. If you are reusing the extra blocks, remove the section that is sided by border fabric #1 and replace with the new section. Press and trim to 8 1/2″ (12 1/2″). Make 4.
  • Making the next 8 blocks: Cut the 16 border #2  – 3″ (4″) squares on one diagonal. Using the 8 sections from above that were put aside, sew one border section to each side. (sorry, I guess I didn’t take a picture of all four sides.) Press and trim to 4 1/2″ (6 1/2″).
  • Using 5 1/4″ (7 1/4″) assorted colored squares that have been cut on both diagonals, sew one section to each side of the above unit. Mix them up. Try not to have two the same. Press and trim to 6 1/4″ (9″).
  • Cut 4 – 5 1/4″ (7 1/4″) border #1 squares on both diagonals. Sew one border #1 section to one assorted colored 5 1/4″ (7 1/4″) section as shown. Make 8 to the left and 8 on the right. Press.
  • Sew assorted colored 5 1/4″ (7 1/4″) sections together to make 16 units. Mix and make them all different. Press.
  • Sew background and assorted sections to each side as shown. Press and trim to 8 1/2″ (12 1/2″). Press and trim. Make 8.

Congrats!

If you can make each block different you have SCRAPS GALORE!!!

We’re done til next month. See you with the next clue on March 13th.

It will be a busy day….I’ll be on retreat!

Yayee!!

So until then……Happy Quilting!!
