Spring Has Sprung and So Has Clue #4

Spring Has Sprung and So Has Clue #4
Charlotte Hawkes Apr 10, 2024

We made it through another winter! Yayee!! Flowers are blooming and the birds are chirping. And here in Rochester, NY, we experienced the totality of the eclipse which was awesome even though we had heavy cloud cover that blocked the view of the whole show. Although we couldn’t see it happening, when the moon totally covered the sun it became as dark as night. That 3 minutes of darkness in the middle of the afternoon was something to behold. All the neighbors were out in the street just to see it happen. It was a once in a lifetime experience for sure. And of course, an hour after it was all over the sky cleared and the sun came out. Go figure!

Apparently I miss counted/miss figured how many 5 1/4″ (7 1/4″) background squares we needed.  My original recipe had 11. When I was sewing this clue I ran out and needed to cut 7 more. I will change the original amounts on the previous recipes. Please remember to change your copy as well. As you can imagine, this pattern that I so brilliantly came up with was a challenge to figure out how many squares are needed.  Counting all those quarter square triangles and coming up with the same number each time was frustrating. And then figuring out how many whole squares we needed…..Oye! What was I thinking.  So if I’m off half a bubble please forgive me! If you need more – go cut em! If you have leftovers then use them as seed for your next scrappy quilt. You know how they multiply!  LOL!

So this month we will be building more blocks. Next month we will finish the last four and put it all together. All right! Let’s get busy!

Scraps Galore – 2024 Mystery – Clue #4

  • Using the 16 units from the last clue: Orient the block as shown and sew one section of assorted 5 1/4″ (7 1/4″) colored squares that have been cut on both diagonals. Sew the remaining sides with sections of background 5 1/4″ (7 1/4″) squares that have been cut on both diagonals. Press and trim. Blocks should measure 6 1/2″ (9″). Make all 16.

  • Using assorted colored and background quarter square triangles from 5 1/4″ (7 1/4″), sew 8 units as shown to the right and 8 units to the left. Press.
  • Sew 36 assorted colored units as shown below. Mix them up. Press.
  • Choose 4 of the colored units just made that play nicely with each other.  Make sure they are all different.  Orient the block as shown below and sew one unit on each of 4 blocks.  Set these aside until next month.
  • Using the same orientation sew colored units on the remaining 12 blocks top and bottom. Press.
  • Sew one right side and one left side unit as shown below to the remaining sides. Make 4 blocks only. Press and trim to 8 1/2″ (12 1/2″). Pin together and label these as Block #3.
  • Sew one right side unit to the corresponding side as shown below. Sew one colored unit to the remaining side. Make 4 blocks only. Press and trim to 8 1/2″ (12 1/2″). Pin together and label as Block #1.
  • Sew one left side unit to the corresponding side as shown below. Sew one colored unit to the remaining side. Make 4 blocks only. Press and trim to 8 1/2″ (12 1/2″). Pin together and label as Block #2.

Obviously, I did not take pictures of the last two blocks finished. Sorry if that is confusing.

See you all next month on May 8th with Clue #5 to finish this up.

Until then Happy Quilting!
