Starting to Spin – Clue #1

Starting to Spin – Clue #1
Charlotte Hawkes Jan 11, 2023

This was my shoe box full of 2″ squares before I started to make this mystery.  It is now about half full of assorted colored squares.  I did have to cut a boatload of background squares as I soon ran out even after raiding and cutting the sizes from 4″ and 6″ squares. That is one reason I keep a stash of cut squares ready just in case I need something more. I sort through the larger sizes and pick out the color I need without having to use yardage.  I did have a pile of odd background pieces that were too big to cut up for the shoe boxes but were not large enough for a project in themselves.  I used a pile of them in there! I’m always happy to use up odds and ends that have been around for a while.  I celebrate when I use up one piece of fabric or even one spool of thread!  My quest is to use what I have and not buy more.

The smaller size (8″ unfinished block) will be about 68″ square and the larger size (10 1/2″ unfinished block) will be about 90″ square.  Test your seam allowances to obtain these block sizes. Probably a scant 1/4″ will do best but figure out what you need to do to get there.  There are a lot of pieces in some of the blocks so those seams will make a huge difference if they are off. And, remember, I’m not forcing you to make this quilt!  LOL!!! Making this mystery was your own idea!!! LOL!!! So, No Whining!!! LOL!!! But I’m glad you are here!!!

So let’s get started.

CRAZY SPINNING SCRAPS – 2023 Mystery

Clue #1

  1. Using 2″ (2 1/2″) assorted and background squares, make 62  four patch blocks as shown. Press to dark. Should measure 3 1/2″ (4 1/2″) square.
  2. Choose 4 four patch blocks for the center block of this quilt. Choose and set colored squares in between as shown.  Sew, alternating (flipping) seams when possible. Press and trim to 8″ (10 1/2″) squares . Set aside with all remaining 4 patch squares.
  3. Using 3 background 2 1/2″ (3″) and one colored 2 1/2″ (3″) squares, make a four patch block. Press and trim to 4 1/4″ (5 1/2″) square.  Make 8.
  4. Cut 8 – 4 3/4″ (6″) background and 8 – 4 3/4″ (6″) different colored squares on one diagonal.  Sew one background HST (half square triangle) to one colored HST. Press and trim to 4 1/4″ (5 1/2″) square. Make 16.
  5. Using 1 background 4 1/4″ (5 1/2″) square, 1 four patch and 2 different HST blocks, sew as shown below.  Press and trim to 8″ (10 1/2″) blocks.  Make 8.

Well, that should keep some of you busy for a while. Don’t worry if you don’t get all 62 four patches done at once.  Just work on them as you can.  I just wanted you to have a good selection to use for your center block.  It will be very noticeable and should be a strong color combination.

The next clue will be published on Feb. 8th.

Until then….Happy Quilting!
