They Say 3’s A Charm So Here’s Clue #3

They Say 3’s A Charm So Here’s Clue #3
Charlotte Hawkes Mar 13, 2024

I usually write the clues on the day that I post them but since I’m leaving on a retreat tomorrow I decided to get it done early.  Usually our retreats are on the weekends but since we are all retired we decided to have it during the week.  Why Not??!!  I was thinking wouldn’t it be fun if we could all go on a retreat together.  We’d finally get to meet each other. Just have a good time.  We’d need a convention center at the least. Sew the mystery. Whoa, scraps as far as the eye could see! Wouldn’t that be fun!! I’d love it!

And there’s my cute little puppy! She’s chewing on the rug!!! GRRRRR!!! She’s almost 6 months old now and I think that must equate to the terrible two’s! She switches from angel-dog to devil-dog at the blink of an eye. One minute she’s cute and cuddle-y and the next minute she’s destroying the house. I guess I’m having one of those “What was I thinking!” moments.  I’ll be happy when she outgrows this chewing stage! Tell me that will happen soon….Please! Before my living room carpet looks like swiss cheese! GRRRRR!

At least the weather will be good driving to retreat. It’s cold and snowy right now but this is western New York.  Wait a minute and it will change. Last week we had 2 days of 70 degrees, now snow and ice and later this week back in the 50’s and maybe even 60’s.  It’s barely the middle of March! The trees are starting to leaf out. Crocus and Primrose are blooming. Daffodils are budded and this is crazy. The maple syrup has stopped running and will be in short supple this year. I thought about planting some early peas in my garden. Usually April is the earliest I have ever planted but maybe I’ll get them in this week yet. March can be a dicey month here with record snow storms and brutal weather and even into April sometimes. These up and down extreme temperatures can lead to some nasty surprises but as long as the fruit trees don’t get damaged by the cold snaps we should be ok. It sure feels good and looks pretty though. But it makes it hard to stay inside and sew. Did I say That!!!???

Here’s the clue……enjoy!

Scraps Galore – 2024 Mystery – Clue #3

  • Make 16 four patch squares from colored assorted 1 1/2″ (2″) squares. Mix and make each one different. Press and trim to 2 1/2″ ( 3 1/2″).
  • Cut the 8 – 3 1/4″ (4 1/4″) assorted colored squares on both diagonals. Sew one section to 2 opposite sides of each 4 patch. Press.
  • Using sections of background 3 1/4″ (4 1/4″) squares that have been cut on both diagonals, sew one section on each of the 2 remaining sides. Press and trim to 3 1/2″ ( 4 3/4″).
  • Orient the block to the picture below. Using colored 3″ (4″) squares that have been cut on one diagonal, sew one HST to the corresponding side.
  • Cut 3″ (4″) background squares on one diagonal and sew one HST to the remaining 3 sides. Press and trim to 4 3/4″ (6 1/2″). Complete all 16 four patches.

That’s all for this month!

There will be two more clues and next time we will start putting this thing together.  See you on April10th. Until then,

Happy Quilting!
